About Word Chains

What Word Chains is

Word Chains is a free daily word puzzle built around one simple idea: every pair of neighboring words should snap together into a familiar phrase or compound word. Start with SUN, and LIGHT follows to make sunlight. LIGHT then leads to SPEED for light speed, and the chain keeps going until the last link is in place.

How the daily chain works

Each day there is one new chain, and everyone who visits plays the exact same puzzle. You get the first word in full and the first letter of every word after it. From there, it is up to you to work out each missing word, one link at a time. You have five hearts for wrong guesses and three hints that reveal letters when you get stuck. Once the day is over, the full answer and the meaning of every phrase is published in our daily recaps.

If one chain a day is not enough, Timed Mode gives you three minutes to solve as many word pairs as you can, and Random Puzzle serves up a fresh chain from the puzzle library whenever you want one.

Who makes it

Word Chains is an independent project, designed, built, and maintained by a single developer rather than a big game studio. The puzzles, the site, and the code behind them are all made in-house.

Why it was built

Word Chains started as an attempt to capture one particular feeling: the moment two ordinary words suddenly click together and you realize you have said that phrase a thousand times without thinking about it. The goal was a puzzle you can finish over a cup of coffee, that rewards a good vocabulary without punishing anyone for not knowing obscure trivia, and that is just as much fun to talk about with friends afterward.
